Your mouth cancer screening should be carried out regularly as early detection can save lives.

What is oral cancer?

Mouth cancer occurs when a tumour develops in the oral area. It may be on the surface of the tongue, insides of the cheeks, roof of the mouth, lips or gums. There are several known causes of oral cancer, including smoking, alcohol or even a poorly balanced diet.

What does mouth cancer screening include?

Your oral cancer screening and assessment will involve inspection of face, neck, lips and inside of your mouth. If your last visit to your dentist was more than 6 months ago, and you experience any of the symptoms mentioned below, we advise you to book a consultation as soon as possible.

Symptoms of oral cancer include:

• Ulcers that bleed or don’t heal
• Persistent sore throat
• Lumps on the soft tissue
• Red or white patches on the lining of the mouth
• Pain or stiffness in the jaw
• Loose teeth for no obvious reason
• Pain or difficulties in swallowing
